CMR's technology environment traces its roots back to 1930, as part of the Chr. Michelsen Institute (CMI). CMI was established to provide free and independent research, as a result of a bequest from former prime minister and ship-owner Christian Michelsen.
Christian Michelsen was a shipowner, business man and politician. He was the Prime Minister of Norway when the country achieved independence from Sweden in 1905.
He left a major part of his fortune (5,5 mill. 1929 NOK) to a foundation for the purpose of establishing an institute for independent scientific research and other cultural and socially oriented activities.
The Chr. Michelsen Institute of Science and Intellectual Freedom (CMI) was established in 1930, as the first independent research institute in Northern Europe.
Christian Michelsen Research AS (CMR) was established in 1992 to carry out research as a limited company owned by the University of Bergen (UoB).
In 2010 CMR is owned by UoB (50%), Uni Research (35%), Statoil(5%), Sparebanken Vest (5%) and CGGVeritas (5%).
